At 28th Week

This year, we have decided to book all our gynae appointments on Sat so that we can save up our annual leave for later. Yesterday was the first appointment of 2008, and also the first appointment for 3rd trimester. Our baby has officially passed the 7th month mark and now weighs 1.24kg. 1 month ago, he was only 680g, which was a tad 'lighter' compared to the statistics posted in the forum by other mothers-to-be at their 24th weeks.

Dr Tan was pleased at our baby's weight, but she wasn't pleased at my weight gain - almost a 3kg increment from last month - and wanted me to be selective of what I'm eating. Very sorry, but I need to be strict with Chinese New Year goodies. :( She did not want me to put on excessive weight for this pregnancy as anything over the 2kg limit per month will remain as my fats after delivery. It will also increase my risk of getting other complications like high blood pressure, etc.

Dr Tan tried to show us our baby's mouth moving on her U/S machine, but both of us could not make anything out of the black-and-white screen! She pointed the eyes and lips to us, but poor us, we just could stare at the screen and wonder what was what. Baby's position was still head down, but at this stage, he could still move around.

Before we left, we requested for the 4D scan and so scheduled the next visit to be on a weekday instead, as Dr Chang does not do such scans on Saturdays. :( Hopefully, we can get to preview our boy's features in the next visit! Wonder who he looks like!

Hello, 3rd Trimester

Today marks the beginning of my 3rd trimester, at 28 weeks. Looking back, the 1st trimester has been one of the toughest periods to endure through. The few months of nausea, cramps, anxiety, and sleepless nights thanks to a nearby 'building' and nightmares/dreams, and the incredible Fatigue. Not to forget the sudden outbreak of pimples!

Trimester 2 has been a 'honeymoon' period indeed - a huge increase in appetite, a big load of our minds since the most critical period has passed and the pregnancy stabilized, a relatively small tummy to cause too much discomforts, and a boost in energy levels, though plague with indigestion, gastric pains, and occasionally, emotional rides. Thankfully, the pimples went away with the 1st trimester, but rashes came along as I forced myself to sleep on my left side due to recommendations from online websites.

Towards the end of the 2nd trimester, things seem to have taken a roundabout turn. Appetite seems to be getting smaller, the feeling of nausea is creeping back silently, and fatigue is starting to haunt me again. With a much bigger bump, it is getting harder to walk - I will feel breathless after walking a short distance. It is really a good thing that hubby is chauffeuring me everywhere, as I can't stand standing for too long nowadays. (There was once in my 1st trimester when I nearly fainted after standing in the MRT from Yishun to Toa Payoh - vision turned blurry, and the feeling of nausea was so overwhelming that I was not able to stand properly.) My tummy now rests on my thighs when I'm sitting - it's a funny feeling. Just yesterday night, my back felt as if it was going to break when I just got onto bed. :( It is also getting hard to find a good position to sleep now - must consider how to place my bump, my back, my spine, my hips, my shoulders...blah.. blah..

Our baby seems to have mastered his Shaolin kungfu kicks already. I am starting to feel his movements and punches more acutely. I read somewhere that a baby should kick at least 10 times a day, but I think our little darling may be doing it 10 times in an hour! Sometimes, he will wake me up in the middle of the night with his karate chops. Well, I guess I will miss all these sensation within my tummy after he is born.

We have started our prenatal class with the famous Mrs Wong at TMC, just last Sunday. It was a really enjoyable class and she was so humorous. Now, I sometimes wonder whether she was serious when she taught Daddies how to communicate/bond with their babies from outside Mummies' tummies. We learned a few stretching exercises and also gotten tips from her on diet, confinement, etc. Gosh, I can't actually remember some of the things. But she has assured us that it is OK to wash ourselves during confinement, and it is a good thing to do so for hygiene reasons. The tradition of not washing hair during such a period originated from China, when water was scarce or not readily available, and there was no such thing as a shower (imagine what the tub of water will become when a lady who has just given birth has soaked herself inside.. shall not be too explicit). She also taught us how to sleep on our left side - as long as you're not completely flat on your back, it is OK. That is a great relief to me, because I have been finding myself almost flat on my back when I wake up in the morning, despite my efforts in the previous night to sleep on my left side.

By the way, TMC is undergoing some renovation. Hopefully, it will be completed soon, before my hospital stay.

May this be a smooth, peaceful, & joyous year!

We celebrated the New Year eve by having a crabby feast at Jumbo, ECP. The above shot (last sunset of 2007) was taken while waiting for our food to arrive. We had wanted to see the fireworks as well, but the Esplanade Drive was closed to vehicles, and Mt Faber should be packed as well. With a protruding tummy, it would be hard to squeeze with the crowds. In the end, we drove to Seletar Reservoir and sat along the roadside, watching people BBQing, taking in their BBQ smoke, and enjoying the cool breeze and serenity in a less crowded part of Singapore. We didn't stay long as it was getting cold, and moreover, I had to rush home to finish my timelog (spoiler!). At 12 midnight, we heard sounds of fireworks and went to the balcony - managed to catch only a glimpse of the highest fireworks from Malaysia. Well, it was better than nothing!

A healthy meal for brand new year! We were getting sick of cooking the same old thing, and so we digged the Internet for new recipes. The above shows our dinner for 1st Jan 2008 - ABC soup, and Sweet & Sour Chicken. The chicken pieces turned out to resemble chicken nuggets, to our pleasant surprise. Except for the pineapple cubes, all ingredients were fresh and unprocessed.

Heard wind from fellow forumers that there was a Takashimaya sale going on, and so we popped by on Friday to take a look, after dinner. Hubby decided to get this Avent sterilizer (model iQ24, meaning it could keep the contents sterilized for 24hrs). Normal price was $200, and this promotional bundle was $149 and came with a box of VIA disposable cups (BPA free!) that was worth ~$30+. It can hold a couple of bottles of varying heights and there is also a 6min rapid sterilizing function.

What's new? The JL sale, again! The promotion that ended yesterday was not bad - 20% storewide for cardmembers, but the thing that attracted us was the $10 rebate in bill for $50 spent. That summed up to almost a 40% discount. What we got - Carlson baby wipes, big and small packs (because it's the cheapest brand), baby nappy liners, plastic tongs, nappy pins, a bodysuit, and 2 basic side-button shirts plus a pair of pants that sold for less than $7 after discounts. We're almost ready for our newborn!
