Handmade With Love

This piece of pink polka dot fabric had been in my stash forever, so I set my heart on destashing it from my pile and made this dress just in time for Halloween.  But it was just too bad that the school decided not to have any celebration this year!

She loved the dress just the same anyway, as I told her it was her Minnie dress.

(10/2012) My Sewing Projects

Recently, I took out my sewing machine from cold storage and started to make some little things for my kids.

#1 - Ian's bag for his music class just happened to have a big hole at the bottom, and hence, decided to make a bag for him first, with his favourite character.  I am lamenting now that I did not fussy cut the fabric to centralise the big McQueen. This is a reversible tote which is totally black on the inside. One day, should Ian grow sick of the character, he can flip it inside out and use it as a black tote.

#2 - An upcycling project, made of a stained maternity tee-shirt and a new tank tee that could not fit Ian at all.  I turned them into a peasant dress with a sash for Isabelle.  Due to my limited experience in cutting out the fabric pieces without using any pattern, the shoulder turns out quite fitting as of now.

#3 - A reversible sun-hat for Ian.  He is outgrowing the Mickey cap that we had gotten for him in HK Disneyland, and so I made this hat with two of his favourite characters - McQueen and Thomas!  This project also utilized the last of my black twill that I had purchased from Spotlight a few years ago!

The hat was made using the tutorial from Martha Stewart if anyone is interested to try.

#4 - A picnic mat that turned out a little smaller than expected.  I used a Premier Print zigzag twill fabric for the top, fused with a fleece interfacing to give it a little cushion, and a PUL fabric as a waterproof bottom.

Another Sewing Project Completed

After procrastinating for several weeks and squeezing hours before bedtime on certain weekends, I have finally completed another sewing project - a purse for lunch! I have been enduring with my draw-string purse bought from Japan for ages, until I could no longer tolerate the hassle of using it. Hence, I have set my mind on making my own pouch.

Verdict: I have been using it for about a week now, and have been pleased with it for it is easier to carry and to retrieve things as compared to my old draw-string purse.

My First Sewing Project

My sewing machine has been used mainly for mending clothes, but finally, it has been used to make something useful for our car.

The seat pockets in our cars have consistently been bursting with our barang barang - correction - Ian's barang barang. We keep a couple of his toys in the car to keep him entertained, the sunshades that we no longer use, a bottle of Dettol hand sanitizer, the car remote control, and occasionally, his milk bottle or a bottle of soft drink. Hence, I thought of making a huge pouch to keep all our things without bursting the pockets.

Now, Ian can reach his toys easily from the top pocket. But the bad thing is, when he throws a tantrum, we cannot keep anything within his reach or else he will take them out and throw them onto the floor. :( Any solution for a toddler with a bad temper?

Singer...

...Is the brand of the sewing machine that Hubby has bought for me today.

I have been thinking of getting one for a while as my Mom's antique machine is going bonkers, but have not acted upon it until we happened to see a promotion at Courts on New Year's eve. After some contemplation and with hubby's blessings, we visited Courts at Causeway Point today and bought a set.

My new sewer @ $199

It is definitely easier to use than a traditional sewing machine, and also much more versatile. You can adjust the speed, the length of the stitch and also do many cool things that my Mom's dinosaur cannot. You can sew a hem, sew a button, do some simple decorations, etc.

Let's see what I can sew for the house? Hmmm....
